Destination Guide
Yanartaş (the 'Burning Stone'), also known as the Chimaera Flames, is one of the most extraordinary natural phenomena in Turkey — eternal flames emerging from a rocky mountainside, fuelled by natural methane gas vents that have burned continuously for over 2,500 years. The drive from Kemer to the Yanartaş trailhead takes 40 minutes, followed by a 30-minute uphill hike. Best visited at sunset.
Getting there: take the D400 south from Kemer for 24 km, past Tekirova. Turn right following signs for 'Çıralı' and drive 6 km through the forest to Çıralı village. Drive through the village on the main road — the Yanartaş car park is at the northern end of Çıralı, clearly signed. Parking: small fee (~€1). The hike from the car park to the flames takes approximately 30 minutes uphill on a rocky path — wear good shoes, bring water, and take it at your own pace.
The experience: the hike winds up through pine forest, becoming rockier as you climb. About 20 minutes in, you'll start smelling the gas. At the top, you'll see dozens of small flames emerging directly from the rocky ground — no vegetation grows near the vents. The flames are most impressive in low light — plan to arrive at the summit 30 minutes before sunset. You can roast marshmallows over the flames (a local tradition). The hike down takes 20 minutes — bring a torch or use your phone's flashlight for the descent.
Driving tips: the D400 and Çıralı road are fine — any car handles the route. The Yanartaş car park is small (about 20 cars) — arrive before 17:00 in summer to get a space. Don't leave valuables in the car. Combine with Çıralı Beach (free parking) and Olympos ruins for a full day: beach morning, Olympos afternoon, Yanartaş sunset. Fill up with petrol before leaving Kemer — no stations in Çıralı.
Take the D400 south 24 km, turn right to Çıralı, drive 6 km through the village to the Yanartaş car park at the north end. 40 minutes from Kemer. Park fee ~€1. 30-minute hike uphill.
Sunset — the flames are most visible in fading light. Start the hike 1 hour before sunset. Bring a torch for the descent. The flames are visible during the day too, but less dramatic.
Moderate — 1 km uphill on a rocky path, takes 30 minutes at a steady pace. Wear good shoes (not flip-flops). Bring water. Suitable for anyone with basic fitness. Not wheelchair accessible.
