Destination Guide
Olympos is one of Turkey's most atmospheric ancient sites — Lycian ruins hidden in a river valley among lemon groves and oleander, ending at a pristine beach where loggerhead turtles nest. It's a 24 km drive from Kemer (35 minutes) via the D400. There is NO public transport to Olympos — a rental car is the only practical way to visit independently.
Getting there: take the D400 south from Kemer past Phaselis and Tekirova. After approximately 24 km, you'll see signs for 'Olympos' directing you to turn right (west) off the D400. Follow the winding road for about 2 km through citrus groves. The final 500 metres are unpaved but manageable in any car in dry weather — take it slowly, especially after rain. You'll reach a small car park at the entrance to the Olympos valley. Parking: ~€1–2 (pay at the small ticket booth).
What to see at Olympos: (1) Walk the river valley path through the ruins — it's a 1.5 km walk from the car park to the beach, with ruins scattered throughout the lemon groves on both sides. (2) The Roman theatre — partially excavated, seats about 3,000. (3) The bathhouse and temple ruins near the river. (4) Olympos Beach — a 2 km pristine sandy beach, protected as a loggerhead turtle nesting site (no development allowed). (5) The eternal flames of Yanartaş (Chimaera) — 3 km from Olympos, a separate 30-minute uphill hike from the car park. Combine both in one day trip.
Driving tips: the D400 is easy, but the final unpaved section requires caution — an SUV (Dacia Duster, €55/day) gives extra confidence, though any car manages in dry conditions. Best time: spring (April–May) for wildflowers and greenery, or autumn (September–October) for warm swimming without summer crowds. Summer: arrive early (before 9:00) — the car park is small and fills up. Wear sturdy shoes — you'll walk about 3 km total through the valley. Bring water and snacks — there's a small café near the beach but options are limited.

Yes — they're only 2 km apart. Park at Olympos, explore the ruins, walk or drive to Çıralı Beach for a swim, then hike Yanartaş at sunset. A full, fantastic day with a rental car.
Yes — the D400 is excellent and the unpaved final section is manageable in any car during dry weather. After heavy rain, take it slowly. An SUV (Dacia Duster) gives extra peace of mind.
