Destination Guide
Phaselis is the easiest and most rewarding day trip from Kemer — just 10 km south on the D400, about a 15-minute drive. This ancient Lycian port city has three beautiful bays, well-preserved ruins including an aqueduct and theatre, and a stunning setting between pine forests and the Mediterranean. A rental car is the best way to visit — public transport is limited to irregular dolmuş services.
Getting there: from Kemer, take the D400 south toward Tekirova. After approximately 10 km, you'll see the brown 'Phaselis' tourist sign on your right. Turn right into the national park entrance. The road winds through pine forest for about 1 km to the car park. Park entry fee: ~€1 per person + ~€1 per car. The car park is large, shaded by pine trees, and a 2-minute walk from the northern harbour — the main archaeological area.
What to see at Phaselis: (1) The Northern Harbour — the best-preserved section, with the main street (cardo), Hadrian's Gate, and the aqueduct remains. (2) The Theatre — a small but well-preserved Hellenistic theatre on the hillside, seating about 1,500. (3) The Central Harbour — the commercial heart of ancient Phaselis, with agora ruins and harbour walls. (4) The Southern Harbour — the quietest bay, perfect for a swim. (5) The three beaches — all within the archaeological site, you can swim among ancient ruins. Bring water shoes — the beaches are pebbly.
Driving tips: the D400 from Kemer is a well-maintained dual carriageway — an easy, scenic drive. The road into the Phaselis national park is paved but narrow — go slowly as there may be pedestrians walking from the coastal path. Parking: free for the first hour in the main car park, included with your park ticket. Best time to visit: arrive before 10:00 AM in summer — after 11:00, tour buses from Antalya arrive and it gets crowded. Phaselis is also magical at sunset — the site stays open until 19:00 in summer.
