The Roman theatre — one of the best-preserved in Anatolia — seats 10,000 and is still used for performances today.
The Church of St. Nicholas in Demre is a major pilgrimage site. St. Nicholas was the bishop of Myra in the 4th century AD, and his legend of secret gift-giving evolved into the Santa Claus tradition. The church contains his empty sarcophagus and beautiful Byzantine frescoes.
