Myra was one of the six principal cities of the Lycian League. Its rock tombs, carved into the cliff face in the 4th century BC, are among the most photographed ancient monuments in Turkey. The Roman theatre — one of the best-preserved in Anatolia — seats 10,000 and is still used for performances today.
The Church of St. Nicholas in Demre is a major pilgrimage site. St. Nicholas was the bishop of Myra in the 4th century AD, and his legend of secret gift-giving evolved into the Santa Claus tradition. The church contains his empty sarcophagus and beautiful Byzantine frescoes.
