Destination Guide
Saklıkent Gorge (Saklıkent Milli Parkı) is Turkey's longest and deepest canyon — an 18 km gorge carved through the Akdağ Mountains, with walls rising 300 metres high and icy-cold water rushing through. The drive from Kemer takes about 2 hours 30 minutes (150 km) via the D400, passing Kaş and Kalkan. It's a full-day adventure that combines a spectacular drive with an unforgettable natural wonder.
Getting there: take the D400 west from Kemer past Kaş and Kalkan. Continue past Kalkan for approximately 45 km. At the town of Eşen, follow signs for 'Saklıkent' (turn left/north off the D400). The road follows the Eşen River valley for about 12 km to the gorge entrance. Total: 150 km, approximately 2 hours 30 minutes. The gorge has a large car park (€1–2) and entrance fee (~€3–5). Open daily 08:00–19:00 (summer).
What to experience: (1) The gorge walk — a suspended wooden walkway takes you 200 metres into the canyon, attached to the cliff face above the water. Beyond the walkway, you can wade into the gorge — the water is knee-to-waist deep and extremely cold (4–8°C year-round from snowmelt). (2) Mud baths — near the entrance, natural mud pools where you can cover yourself in mineral-rich mud (popular with locals). (3) Riverside restaurants — built on platforms over the river, serve fresh trout and Turkish food. (4) Rubber shoes — available to rent at the entrance (~€2) if you don't want to soak your own footwear. (5) Tubing — rubber rings available for floating in the calmer sections of the river near the entrance.
Driving tips: the D400 is excellent all the way (150 km — a long but beautiful drive). Start early — leave Kemer by 07:30 to arrive at Saklıkent by 10:00 before the tour buses. The gorge gets crowded from 11:00 onwards. Bring: water shoes or sandals that can get wet, a change of clothes (you WILL get wet), a towel, and a waterproof bag for your phone. The water is genuinely freezing — the cold shock is part of the experience! Combine with a visit to Patara Beach (on the way back) for a perfect contrast — icy canyon morning, sandy beach afternoon.
150 km via D400 past Kaş and Kalkan to Eşen, turn left/north 12 km to gorge. 2h 30min. Large car park, entrance ~€3–5. Open 08:00–19:00 summer.
4–8°C year-round — it's snowmelt from the Akdağ Mountains. The cold shock is intense but exhilarating. Rubber shoes available to rent (~€2). Bring a change of clothes — you will get wet.
The wooden walkway section is fine for all ages. Wading beyond the walkway is suitable for older children (8+) and adults. The water can be fast-flowing in spring — check conditions at the entrance.
