Destination Guide
Kalkan is the Turkish Riviera's most elegant harbour town — whitewashed Greek-style houses cascade down to a sapphire-blue bay, with rooftop restaurants, boutique hotels, and a sophisticated atmosphere. It's 120 km west of Kemer (2 hours 15 minutes via the D400). The drive passes Kaş and is one of the most beautiful coastal routes in Turkey. A rental car also gives you access to nearby Patara Beach — Turkey's longest sandy beach at 18 km.
Getting there: take the D400 west from Kemer, passing Finike (85 km) and Demre/Myra (97 km). Continue past Kaş (105 km). After Kaş, the D400 climbs inland briefly before descending toward Kalkan. The final approach offers a spectacular view of Kalkan bay from above — worth stopping for a photo. Total: 120 km, approximately 2 hours 15 minutes. Kalkan has several car parks — the main one near the harbour (€2–3/day). In summer, the town centre car park fills by midday — arrive before 11:00.
What to experience in Kalkan: (1) The old town — steep cobbled streets lined with whitewashed houses, bougainvillea, boutique shops, and art galleries. Wear comfortable shoes — Kalkan is built on a hillside. (2) Rooftop dining — Kalkan has some of the best restaurants on the Turquoise Coast, many with rooftop terraces overlooking the bay. (3) Kalkan Beach — a small pebble beach in the town centre with clear water. (4) Patara Beach — 15 km from Kalkan, 18 km of golden sand, protected loggerhead turtle nesting site. Drive there in 25 minutes. (5) Kaputaş Beach — 20 km east of Kalkan (between Kalkan and Kaş), a stunning turquoise cove.
Driving tips: the D400 is excellent throughout. The section between Kaş and Kalkan has some steep climbs and descents — use low gears. Patara Beach (15 km from Kalkan) is an essential side trip — the road is paved and easy. Kalkan parking fills up in summer — the harbour car park is your best option. The drive back to Kemer in the late afternoon offers golden Mediterranean light — spectacular. Combine Kalkan, Kaş, and Kaputaş Beach in a single epic day or overnight trip.

Yes — Patara is 15 km from Kalkan (25-minute drive). It's Turkey's longest sandy beach (18 km) and a protected turtle nesting site. Free parking near the beach entrance.
Both are fantastic. Kaş is more bohemian and diving-focused. Kalkan is more elegant with better dining. They're only 15 km apart — visit both in one trip if you have time.
