Destination Guide
Kaş is the bohemian jewel of the Turquoise Coast — a whitewashed harbour town 105 km west of Kemer, beloved by divers, hikers, and travellers seeking an alternative to the big resorts. The drive from Kemer via the D400 is one of Turkey's most scenic coastal routes, passing through Demre (Myra) and Finike. The journey takes about 2 hours each way.
Getting there: take the D400 west from Kemer. The route passes through: Finike (85 km, 1h 20min — good coffee stop at the marina), Demre (97 km — Myra rock tombs), and then follows the coast to Kaş. The final 30 km from Demre to Kaş is a spectacular coastal road with mountain on one side and sea on the other. Total: 105 km, approximately 2 hours. Kaş has several car parks — the main one near the harbour is convenient (~€2–3/day). In summer, arrive early — Kaş is popular and parking fills up.
What to experience in Kaş: (1) The old town — bougainvillea-draped houses, cobbled streets, boutique shops, and rooftop restaurants. Park and wander on foot. (2) Kaputaş Beach — 10 km east of Kaş on the D400, one of Turkey's most photographed beaches. Park at the roadside and walk down 187 steps to the turquoise water. (3) Diving — Kaş is one of the Mediterranean's top dive destinations, with submerged canyons, wrecks, and abundant marine life. (4) The Lycian Way — the famous long-distance hiking trail passes through Kaş. (5) Sunset dinner — rooftop restaurants overlooking the harbour offer spectacular sunset views.
Driving tips: the D400 is excellent throughout. The Demre-to-Kaş section is winding in places — it's a beautiful drive, not a fast one. Allow 2 hours and enjoy the journey. Fill up in Finike or Demre — petrol stations are scarce on the final stretch. Kaş parking: the main harbour car park is most convenient. In peak summer (July–August), arrive before 10:00 or after 16:00 to find parking easily. The drive back to Kemer at sunset is stunning — the light on the Mediterranean is golden.
105 km, approximately 2 hours via the D400 coastal highway. The route passes Demre (Myra) and Finike. A stunning scenic drive — allow extra time for photo stops.
Demre (Myra rock tombs) at 75 km is the must-stop — one of Turkey's most impressive ancient sites. Finike (85 km) has a lovely marina for a coffee break. Kaputaş Beach is 10 km before Kaş — iconic photo stop.
Yes — 2 hours each way makes for a full but rewarding day. Leave at 08:00, arrive 10:00, explore until 16:00, back by 18:00. Overnight is even better — Kaş has excellent boutique hotels.
