Destination Guide
Patara Beach is Turkey's longest sandy beach at 18 km — a vast expanse of golden sand backed by dunes and ancient Lycian ruins. It's a protected national park and loggerhead turtle nesting site, meaning there's no development — just pure, wild coastline. The drive from Kemer takes about 2 hours 30 minutes (140 km) via the D400. Combine with nearby Kalkan (15 km away) for an unforgettable day.
Getting there: take the D400 west past Kaş and Kalkan. At the town of Kalkan, follow signs for 'Patara' (turn left/south off the D400 onto a secondary road). The road passes through the village of Patara and the ancient city ruins before reaching the beach. Total: 140 km, approximately 2 hours 30 minutes. Parking: large, free car park near the beach entrance. National park entry: ~€3–5 per person. The beach is a 5-minute walk from the car park through the ancient ruins — you walk past the Patara parliament building and theatre to reach the sand.
What to experience: (1) The beach — 18 km of golden sand, shallow water, gentle waves. Walk 10 minutes in either direction and you'll have the beach almost to yourself, even in summer. (2) Patara Ancient City — the ruins are scattered between the car park and the beach, including a well-preserved theatre, the parliament building (Bouleuterion) where the Lycian League met, and a Roman triumphal arch. (3) The dunes — at the eastern end of the beach, large sand dunes create a dramatic landscape. (4) Sunset — Patara faces west and has some of the best sunsets on the Turkish coast. (5) Turtle nests — in summer (June–September), marked-off areas on the beach protect loggerhead turtle nests.
Driving tips: the D400 is excellent. The secondary road from Kalkan to Patara (15 km) is paved but narrow — take it slowly. Best time: arrive early (before 10:00) to see the ruins in cool morning light, then hit the beach. There's a small café near the beach entrance for drinks and snacks. Sun protection is essential — there's no natural shade on the beach. Bring an umbrella or beach tent. Swimming: the water is shallow and waves are gentle — excellent for families. No lifeguards — swim within your limits.
140 km via D400 to Kalkan, then 15 km on secondary road to Patara. 2h 30min. Large free car park. Entry ~€3–5 pp. Walk through ancient ruins to reach the sand.
Rarely — at 18 km long, there's always space. Walk 10 minutes from the entrance and you'll have the beach almost to yourself, even in August. No development allowed — pure nature.
Yes — the ruins are between the car park and the beach. You literally walk through the ancient city to reach the sand. Allow 45–60 minutes for the ruins, then enjoy the beach.
