Destination Guide
Antalya Old Town (Kaleiçi) is one of Turkey's most atmospheric urban districts — a maze of cobbled streets, Ottoman-era houses, Roman ruins, and a stunning clifftop harbour. It's a 50-minute drive from Kemer (45 km) via the D400. A rental car gives you the flexibility to explore at your own pace and combine Kaleiçi with nearby Konyaaltı Beach or the Düden Waterfalls.
Getting there: take the D400 north from Kemer. Stay on the D400 for approximately 42 km — you'll pass through Antalya's outskirts. Follow signs for 'Şehir Merkezi' (City Centre) and 'Kaleiçi'. The best parking for the old town is the underground car park near Hadrian's Gate (Hadrian Kapısı Otoparkı) — ~€2/hour, secure, and located right at the entrance to Kaleiçi. Alternative: the large car park near Antalya Marina (Kaleiçi Marina Otoparkı) — ~€3/day, 10-minute walk to the old town.
What to experience in Kaleiçi: (1) Hadrian's Gate (Üçkapılar) — a magnificent Roman triumphal arch built in 130 AD for Emperor Hadrian's visit. The main entrance to the old town. (2) The old town streets — wander aimlessly through cobbled lanes lined with restored Ottoman houses, many converted into boutique hotels, cafes, and shops. (3) Antalya Harbour — a beautiful natural harbour at the foot of the old town, with boats offering 1-hour bay cruises (€15–20). Descend via the steep streets or the glass elevator near the park. (4) Kesik Minare (Broken Minaret) — a fascinating building that was a Roman temple, then a Byzantine church, then a mosque, now partially ruined. (5) Rooftop cafes — many old town buildings have rooftop terraces with sea views — perfect for a Turkish coffee break.
Driving tips: Antalya city traffic can be heavy, especially during rush hours (08:00–09:30, 17:00–19:00). The D400 from Kemer flows well, but the final 5 km into the city centre can be slow. Weekday mornings are the best time to drive in. Parking at Hadrian's Gate car park is the most convenient — enter your licence plate at the payment machine before returning to your car (Turkish car parks use plate recognition). Don't try to drive into the old town — streets are pedestrian-only or extremely narrow. Park and walk.
Hadrian's Gate underground car park (~€2/hour) — most convenient, located at the old town entrance. Kaleiçi Marina car park (~€3/day) is cheaper but a 10-minute walk. Don't try driving into the old town — streets are pedestrian-only.

Yes — Konyaaltı Beach is a 10-minute drive from Kaleiçi, and Düden Waterfalls (Lower Düden) is a 20-minute drive. With a rental car, you can see all three in one day.
