Destination Guide
Aspendos is home to the best-preserved Roman theatre in the world — a 15,000-seat masterpiece built in 155 AD that's so intact it still hosts opera and ballet performances today. It's 75 km east of Kemer (1 hour 10 minutes via the D400). A rental car makes visiting Aspendos easy and lets you combine it with Perge (25 km away) for a spectacular Roman ruins day.
Getting there: take the D400 north from Kemer through Antalya. Continue east on the D400 past Lara and toward Serik. After approximately 70 km, follow the brown 'Aspendos' signs — turn left (north) off the D400. The theatre is about 4 km from the turn-off. Total: 75 km, approximately 1 hour 10 minutes. Large car park at the site entrance (~€1–2). Entry: ~€10–12 per person. Open 08:00–19:00 (summer), 08:00–17:00 (winter).
What to see at Aspendos: (1) The Theatre — this is the main event. Built by the architect Zenon in 155 AD, it seats 15,000 and is so well-preserved that the stage building still stands to its full height. The acoustics are extraordinary — stand in the centre of the orchestra and speak normally, and you'll be heard in the top row. (2) The Aqueduct — one of the best-preserved Roman aqueducts in Anatolia, with two massive siphons. Located about 1 km from the theatre — worth the short walk. (3) The Acropolis — the remains of the ancient city on the hill above the theatre. Less well-preserved but offers panoramic views. (4) Summer performances — the Aspendos International Opera and Ballet Festival runs June–July. Watching Aida or Turandot in a 2,000-year-old Roman theatre is an unforgettable experience — book tickets months in advance.
Driving tips: the D400 is excellent. Aspendos is well-signposted with brown tourist signs from the D400. The car park is large. Best time: morning for the best light on the theatre. Summer midday is hot — bring water and a hat. Combine with Perge (30 minutes back west) for a full Roman ruins day — Perge in the morning, Aspendos in the afternoon. If attending a summer performance: the theatre is spectacular at night when lit. Bring a cushion — Roman stone seats are hard after 2 hours! Book opera tickets at www.aspendosfestival.gov.tr.
