Destination Guide
Perge is one of Turkey's most impressive and underrated ancient cities β a vast Roman metropolis with a 12,000-seat stadium, well-preserved Hellenistic gate towers, a colonnaded main street with a water channel running down its centre, and extensive bath complexes. It's 50 km from Kemer (55 minutes via D400) and far less crowded than Ephesus. A rental car makes visiting effortless β Perge is not easily reached by public transport.
Getting there: take the D400 north from Kemer toward Antalya. Just before reaching Antalya city centre, follow signs for 'Perge' and 'Aksu' β turn right (east) off the D400. Perge is located about 2 km from the D400 in the suburb of Aksu. Total: 50 km, approximately 55 minutes. The site has a large, free car park at the entrance. Entry: ~β¬8β10 per person. Open 08:00β19:00 (summer), 08:00β17:00 (winter).
What to see at Perge: (1) The Hellenistic Gate β two massive round towers flanking the main entrance, built in the 3rd century BC and remarkably well-preserved. (2) The Roman Stadium β one of the best-preserved in Turkey, seating 12,000 spectators. You can walk through the vaulted passageways beneath the seats. (3) The colonnaded main street β 300 metres long, with a water channel running down the centre, lined with columns and shops. (4) The Agora β the main marketplace, with remains of shops and a circular temple. (5) The Roman Baths β extensive bath complex with remaining mosaic floors. (6) The Theatre β a 15,000-seat Roman theatre on the hillside (currently under restoration β check access status).
Driving tips: the D400 is easy. Perge is in Antalya's eastern suburbs β follow brown tourist signs. Combine with a visit to Aspendos (25 km further east) for a full Roman ruins day. Best time: spring or autumn β the site has limited shade and summer midday heat is intense. Bring water, a hat, and sun protection. Allow 2β3 hours to explore the site fully. The car park is free and large. Perge has a small cafΓ© near the entrance for cold drinks. Combine with Antalya Old Town (25 km back west) for a history-packed day.
