Activity Guide
Beyond the famous attractions, the Kemer region hides secret spots that most tourists never find — because they're not in guidebooks, not on tour bus routes, and often unmarked. This guide reveals 10 hidden gems, from a ghost village to a waterfall cave, shared by locals who know every track and trail. All require a car to reach — some require an SUV.
1. Maden Bay (Maden Koyu) — a stunning turquoise cove 25 minutes south of Kemer, accessed via an unmarked dirt track. Pine trees to the water's edge, crystal-clear swimming, usually empty on weekdays. Take the D400 south, look for the small 'Maden Koyu' sign between Tekirova and the Olympos turn-off. SUV recommended.
2. The Ghost Village of Gedelme — an abandoned Greek village in the Taurus foothills, 45 minutes from Kemer. Stone houses being slowly reclaimed by nature, a crumbling church, and absolute silence. Take the mountain road from Kemer toward the Tahtalı base, then follow unmarked tracks (ask a local for directions). Eerie and beautiful.
3. Suluada Island ('Turkish Maldives') — a small island with white sand and impossibly turquoise water, accessible via boat from Adrasan (€15–20). The boat trip takes 45 minutes each way. Drive to Adrasan (45 min), take the morning boat, spend 3–4 hours on the island. Bring everything — no facilities.
4. Ceneviz Bay (Ceneviz Koyu) — a hidden pebble cove near Tekirova, surrounded by pine forest. Popular with Turkish families who know about it, unknown to tourists. Paved but narrow road. Arrive before 10:00 on weekends. Stunning clear water.
5. Yanartaş by moonlight — everyone visits Yanartaş (Chimaera flames) at sunset, but locals know the real magic is visiting at night under a full moon. The flames are more vivid against complete darkness, and you'll likely have the site to yourself. Bring a torch for the 30-minute hike up.
6. Alacasu (Paradise Bay) — a tiny hidden cove within the Phaselis national park, between the Northern and Southern harbours. Walk 15 minutes from the Phaselis car park along the coastal path. Almost always empty even when Phaselis is busy. Crystal water, your own private beach at a world-famous site.
7. Kumluca Friday Market — not a hidden spot but a hidden experience. The largest market in the region, 35 minutes south of Kemer. Hundreds of stalls selling everything from fresh produce to textiles. Zero tourists — this is where locals shop. Go early (08:00) for the best atmosphere. Practice your Turkish numbers for bargaining.
8. Boncuk Bay (Boncuk Koyu) — a tiny pebble beach near Çamyuva with calm, clear water. Turn off the D400 at the 'Boncuk Koyu' sign. The road is paved but narrow. Limited parking (~15 cars). A local favourite for swimming and picnics. Go on a weekday for solitude.
9. The Taurus Mountain Tea Gardens — scattered throughout the foothills above Göynük and Kemer, family-run tea gardens (çay bahçesi) with panoramic mountain views. No signs — you find them by driving up forest roads and asking locals. Fresh Turkish tea, gözleme (savoury pancakes), and absolute peace. The Dacia Duster SUV is ideal for the access roads.
10. Sazak Bay (Sazak Koyu) — the most remote hidden beach, 50 minutes south of Kemer past Adrasan. A wild, undeveloped bay with golden sand. Almost always empty. Paved but winding road. No facilities — bring everything. The reward: complete solitude on a beautiful Mediterranean beach.
Maden Bay for a stunning swim spot 25 minutes away. The Ghost Village of Gedelme for atmosphere and photography. Suluada Island for a 'Maldives' experience. All require a car — most aren't in any guidebook.
For most — no. Maden Bay and the Taurus tea gardens benefit from an SUV (Dacia Duster, €55/day) for unpaved tracks. Ceneviz Bay, Boncuk Bay, and Sazak Bay are paved all the way. Ghost Village Gedelme requires confident driving on rough tracks.
Yes — all are safe, but most are remote with no facilities or mobile signal. Tell someone where you're going, bring water and snacks, and don't attempt unpaved tracks after rain. The adventure is part of the appeal.
