Rental Guide
Navigating Turkish roads is straightforward β the D400 is one road, well-signposted, and hard to get lost on. But for exploring remote beaches, finding hidden ruins, and navigating Antalya city, good navigation is essential. RENAX doesn't provide dedicated GPS units (your smartphone is better), but this guide covers the best navigation setup for your rental car.
Smartphone navigation setup: (1) Phone mount β essential. A dashboard or windscreen mount keeps your phone visible and hands-free. Holding a phone while driving is illegal in Turkey (β¬50 fine). Bring your own mount or buy one locally (β¬5β10 at any electronics shop). All RENAX vehicles have USB ports for charging. (2) Google Maps β the best all-round navigation app for Turkey. Download offline maps for the Antalya region before your trip (Settings β Offline Maps β select area). This way you'll have navigation even without mobile data. (3) Alternative apps: Maps.me (excellent offline maps, good for hiking trails), Waze (community-reported hazards and speed cameras β useful on the D400).
Mobile data in Turkey: if you're using your home SIM, check roaming charges β they can be expensive. Better options: (1) Buy a Turkish tourist SIM at Antalya Airport or in Kemer (Turkcell, Vodafone, TΓΌrk Telekom β ~β¬20β30 for 20GB, valid 30 days). (2) Use an eSIM service like Airalo for data-only connectivity (~β¬5β10 for 1β3GB). (3) Rely on offline maps (Google Maps and Maps.me work without data once downloaded). Having some mobile data is useful for WhatsApp (how we communicate) and real-time traffic. But with offline maps, you can navigate the entire coast without spending a cent on data.
What to do if you get lost: (1) Don't panic β you're in a safe country with friendly people. (2) Look for the D400 signs β this is the main coastal highway. If you find the D400, you can find your way. (3) Ask a local β Turks are famously helpful. 'Kemer nerede?' (Where is Kemer?) will get you directions with gestures and smiles. (4) WhatsApp us β we know every road in the region and can guide you back. This is the advantage of renting from locals β we're your personal navigation backup.
We don't provide dedicated GPS units β your smartphone with Google Maps or Maps.me is superior. All our vehicles have USB ports for charging. Bring a phone mount. Download offline maps before your trip for data-free navigation.
Google Maps β best all-round, good coverage, offline maps available. Maps.me β excellent for hiking trails and very remote areas. Waze β useful for community-reported speed cameras on the D400. All are free.
No β download offline maps (Google Maps or Maps.me) before your trip and navigate without data. Having some data is useful for real-time traffic and WhatsApp communication, but offline maps work perfectly for turn-by-turn navigation.
