Driving Guide
Winter driving in Turkey varies dramatically by region. The Mediterranean coast (Kemer, Antalya) has mild winters with rare snow — you can drive normally. But the interior experiences heavy snow and ice from November to March. This guide covers winter requirements and safety tips.
Mediterranean coast winter: Kemer/Antalya — mild winters, rarely below 8°C, snow extremely rare (once every 5–10 years). Roads normal year-round. No special equipment needed. D400 remains open, dry, and safe. Rain more common (Dec–Feb) — reduce speed and increase following distance in wet conditions.
Inland Turkey winter: if driving to Cappadocia (8 hrs), Ankara, or eastern Turkey — prepare. Winter tyres mandatory in 47 provinces (1 Dec – 1 Apr), strictly enforced with checkpoints and fines. RENAX can advise on winter-equipped vehicles for long-distance trips — most guests stay on snow-free coast.
Winter driving tips: (1) Check weather before long drives — mountain passes can close. (2) Carry snow chains if driving to Cappadocia/eastern Turkey in winter. (3) Keep blanket, water, snacks for long winter drives. (4) Days are shorter — finish driving before dark (~17:30 in December). (5) Major highways salted and ploughed.
