Driving Guide
Turkish road signs follow the Vienna Convention standard — the same system used across Europe. If you've driven in Germany, France, or Italy, you'll find Turkish signs familiar. This guide explains the key signs you'll encounter on the D400 and beyond.
Colour coding: BLUE circles = mandatory instruction. RED circles with slash = prohibition. RED triangles = warning. BLUE rectangles = info/motorway. GREEN = motorway direction. WHITE = main road direction. BROWN = tourist attraction. YELLOW diamonds = priority road.
Key signs: 'DUR' = STOP (red octagon). 'GİRİLMEZ' = No Entry. 'HIZ SINIRI' = Speed Limit. 'YAYA GEÇİDİ' = Pedestrian Crossing. 'DİKKAT' = Caution. Motorway signs use 'OTOYOL' on green. The D400 signs are white rectangles with black text. Tourist signs (brown) include English names alongside Turkish.
Directional signs in tourist areas include English transliterations. 'Kemer', 'Antalya', 'Phaselis', 'Olympos' are clearly signposted on brown tourist signs. Distance in kilometres. On the D400, major junctions give 2–3 km advance warning. In rural areas, some signs are Turkish-only — GPS handles this.
Major directional signs include English. Tourist signs (brown) always have English names. Warning signs use international symbols. Rural signs may be Turkish-only.
'Dur' = STOP — red octagonal sign, identical to international stop signs. Complete stop required. 'Dikkat' = Caution. 'Hız Sınırı' = Speed Limit.
Yes — Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals, same system as most of Europe. Colours, shapes, and symbols are familiar to European drivers.
