Driving Guide
Turkey driving rules are broadly similar to European standards, with a few important differences that tourists need to know. This guide covers essential regulations: speed limits, alcohol limits, mobile phone use, seatbelt requirements, child seats, and rules that Turkish police actually enforce.
Blood alcohol limit: 0.05% for private car drivers — the same as most European countries. Turkey enforces this strictly — penalty: immediate licence confiscation, ~€200+ fine, potential court. Our advice: zero alcohol if driving. Random breath tests (alkol kontrol) are common, especially on weekend evenings near resort areas.
Mobile phone use while driving is illegal unless hands-free. Police actively enforce this — €50+ fine. Seatbelts mandatory for ALL occupants, front and rear. Children under 135 cm must use an appropriate child seat. Daytime running lights or dipped headlights mandatory on all vehicles.
Priority rules: vehicles on main roads have right of way. At roundabouts, vehicles already ON the roundabout have priority (unless signs indicate otherwise). In practice, many Turkish drivers treat roundabouts as free-for-alls — approach cautiously. Red lights are strictly enforced with cameras. Flashing yellow means proceed with caution.
