Driving Guide
Driving licence requirements in Turkey are straightforward for most foreign visitors. EU, UK, US, Canadian, Australian, and NZ licences are accepted without an international driving permit. This guide covers exactly what you need, age requirements, and special cases.
Accepted licences: EU, UK, USA, Canada, Australia, NZ, and most European non-EU countries (Switzerland, Norway, etc.) — accepted without IDP. Your licence must: (1) be a valid full licence (not provisional), (2) held for at least 2 years, (3) be in English or Latin alphabet, (4) include a photo. Cyrillic, Arabic, or Chinese licences need an IDP or certified Turkish translation.
Age requirements: minimum 23 years. Minimum licence holding: 2 years. No maximum age limit. Unlike international chains, RENAX has NO young driver surcharge (<25) and NO senior driver surcharge (>70). Your age doesn't affect your rental price.
International Driving Permit: a translation of your licence into multiple languages, issued by your home automobile association. Needed if: your licence is non-Latin alphabet, or you want extra peace of mind. Must carry BOTH original licence AND IDP. UK: get 1968 Vienna Convention IDP from AA/RAC (~£5.50, ~1 week).
Yes — UK photocard licence accepted without IDP. Must have held licence 2+ years, minimum age 23 to rent with RENAX.
Not if your licence is in English/Latin alphabet (EU, UK, US, Australian). Non-Latin licences need an IDP. IDP always a good backup.
23 years with 2+ years driving experience. No young/senior driver surcharges at RENAX — unlike most chains.
